Finding Politicians @ DIR

Arjan Nusselder created a two page article based on the work in his AI Bachelor thesis. The paper is called Expert Finding of Dutch Politicians. The link here shows the same version as appeared in the proceedings.

Arjan presented his work during the poster presentation and even attracted attention from delegates from a country without a parliamentary tradition (i.e. China).

A slightly longer version of the paper, submitted as a demo to the European Semantic Web Conference 2009, got the following positive review but was rejected anyway:

The paper describes a system for matching people to topics. People are
represented by all text related to that person. Topics are chunks of text -
queries, committee descriptions etc. The system is described in the context of
providing relevant items from an information department to politicians.
The paper is clear, well motivated, with sufficient detail to explain the
approach without dumbing it down or obscuring it. A small evaluation is
described, in which politicians are matched to the sub-committees on which
they sit. The description of an evaluation doubles the value of the paper.
The demonstration is well described, and looks interesting.
The paper is well written, with no specific errors seen.
